DIY: Framed Chalkboard in 4 Easy Steps

I was so excited to make this DIY project because for one, I needed something new added to our hallway of various picture frames and two, it is so versatile!
Another great thing about this DIY project is that you can make it to fit your needs and style by choosing the size and style of the frame.
*TIP: Try searching for inexpensive frames at thrift stores. You might be able to find something really unique!

Supplies:
  • Picture frame of your choice
  • Screwdriver or Drill
  • Something to spray paint over (such as a drop cloth)
  • Chalkboard Spray Paint (can be found at your local arts & crafts store)
  • Chalkboard Pens
(Pictured to the left is the frame and art I decided to paint over. I just loved the distressed look of the mirror frame but wasn’t too crazy about the floating image of the birds. )

1. Take the art and/or glass out of the frame. I tried using a screw driver for this but apparently I wasn’t strong enough to get those tough little screws out of the frame so I  borrowed my husband’s drill.

2. Lay the glass from the frame right side up on a drop cloth or something similar. Make sure it is clean, then lightly spray on a coat of the chalkboard spray paint.
3. Allow the coat of spray paint to dry and repeat.
4. Once the chalkboard paint is completely dry, put the glass back in the frame, hang and decorate!

*Tip: You can use regular chalk, but I really love chalkboard markers. They are so much fun, come in a variety of colors and are just as easy to erase as regular chalk by adding a little bit of water to a paper towel. ( I found a 4 pack of primary colored chalk markers at Michaels for $11.99 but used a 40% off coupon.)

And below is the finished product. I had a hard time getting a good picture because of the mirrored frame. No matter how I tried, it of course always had something in the reflection.

Anyway, I am super happy with it, my husband loves it and we plan on using it the new chalkboard for menu planning, reminders and to just have fun and doodle!
